Doen alsof / Making believe

We may not play it as openly anymore as we did as kids, but we still do it… acting as if. Acting as if we know all about a certain subject, acting as if we’re the perfect parents, acting as if we couldn’t care less about not having the money to go on a holiday this year… Acting as if we’re very self assured…. We are very good at making believe..

Like many other less favorable characteristics as complaining, fooling around, being wild and unfocused, making messes,  it can be put to a creative use.  Between the boundaries of your journal  you may cheat and lie and make believe to your heart's content. As I did here...
There was this crumpled ball of dried-up heavy watercolour paper , thrown on the floor in frustration.  I had mopped up bistre and black ink with it . Garbage has an irresistable influence on me…especially  old dirty paper,  so I unfolded it.  It looked like something that had just been dug up from a pyramid. Now, I haven’t told you that at the age of ten I wanted to become an archeologist and dug deep holes in my Mum’s dahlia beds. The rusty nails and broken crockery parts that I unearthed were exposed on the garden table for the kids nextdoor.

So I couldn’t help seeing  this leathery paper as something incredibly ancient and of great cultural value. Why not  play that it really was…?  That’s where my making believe-experience really  kicked in and I started playing archeologist again, tearing the paper   into interesting pieces, arranging them on a page as if they were artefacts and stamping some  numbers around them. To make it look real I even added  an imagined archeological site and the date of the discovery .

For a while I was back in my old fantasy and thoroughly enjoyed it.  And tit looks as if it could have been ......, well...  don’t you think?

Jezelf vers(t)ieren /Want a makeover?

Find a photograph of your own face (or take one) and fotocopy it in black and white. (While you’re at it, you might as well make 4 or 5 copies…) Decorate, spoil  or otherwise add to your portraits with pastel chalk, felt tip pens, text markers or fineliners. The more you make.  the more decorative ideas you’ll get.

Then write an “I am…list”. Just jot down a whole list of  things about yourself like hobbies, your tasks, things that you’re good or very bad at. It could look like this: I am the cakemaker, the catlittercleaner, the johnscrubber,  the lasagnamaker, the bad bathroomsinger, the pannycake-granny, the awry jumper knitter… etc. Take your time and you’ ll see that you can come up with a beautiful and original list. Much longer and far more hilarious  than you had expected!   Always end your list with : I am all that and many things more.
Nou?  Jij mag er wezen, toch?
Did I hear you say you never know what to write about yourself?

There are many ways to give yourself a stunning new look!
