Met een vette oranje knipoog.../Orange madness, making thematic collages

Doe een dezer dagen een huis aan huis krantje open en het oranje vliegt je letterlijk naar de keel!

Of je nu voetbalfan bent of juist baalt van al die ballen, creatief kun je er iets heel leuks mee doen. Maak een  thema-collage.

Knip al die gekke foto’s, rare opschriften of waanzinnige reclames uit, schilder een vel papier of een journaalpagina knaloranje, teken er 12 vierkantjes (of andere vormen) op en plak in ieder vakje een van je vondsten of een detail ervan. En daarna (en dat is het allerleukste) schrijf je bij ieder plaatje je eigen eigenwijze commentaar.  Enthousiast of ironisch, snibbig of sportief, in elk geval…..  heel creatief.
En of er nu gewonnen wordt of verloren… wij kunnen er altijd wat leuks van maken…toch?

Themacollages kun je natuurlijk over allerlei onderwerpen maken die behoorlijk wat opschudding in de media veroorzaken. 
 

Open any  Dutch newspaper these days and the color orange (or even the word) seems to dominate all pages.  (Orange is our national color and the Dutch footbal-team has just entered the European Soccerl Competition. Suddenly the Dutch get very patriotic and a hell of an advertisement storm breaks loose. You can buy orange hats, orange cakes, orange yoghurt and even orange cauliflower. Cakes, milkpacks, chocolats suddenly take on football shapes and some fanatics spray their bikes, cars and garden fences shocking-orange. Orange is HOT (for as long as the national team’s doing well in the competition) and there’s no escaping from it.

Whether or not you’re a soccer fan,  great creative things can be done with these crazy expressions when you know how to act on the spur of the moment. Now’s the time to make a theme collage!! Cut out all those crazy pictures, ridiculous ads and roaring newspaper headlines. Then paint a journal page bright orange and roughly draw 12 squares on it.  In each of these boxes now paste a clipping, or a significant part of it...Then (and this is the part that I enjoy most) write your comment in every box, be it enthusiastic or ironic, endearing or furious,  as long as it is  ..... creative.

And most important:  theme collages like this can be made about all sorts of “events” which generate  a lot of media attention, think of Christmas, Mother’s Day, the Olympics, your national elections, whatever… And whatever the outcome you had your fun, hadn’t you?  )

 

Afkijken mag 3/Being a creative copycat

Zullen we de kunst eens afkijken bij een echte kunstenaar? Pierre Alechinsky was een van de leden van de COBRA groep, een club van dichters, schilders en schrijvers die rond 1948 besloten om samen dingen te gaan maken. Ze lieten zich inspireren door mythen, sagen, symbolen en ook door kindertekeningen. 

Kenmerken van Alechinsky’s werk zijn: - nergens een rechte lijn, - simpele kinderlijke beelden - veel randen en kaders, vaak met daar omheen weer een ander kader- de randen zijn bewust bibberig getekend en soms versierd met ‘bezemachtige franjes’ - hij werkt graag met plaatjes in plaatjes zodat je een afwisselend beeld krijgt waar veel op te zien is.

Nothing’s  more instructive than copying the style of a real artist.  Pierre Alechinsky was a member of COBRA , a group of poets, painters and writers that (around 1948) decided  to start making art together. They were inspired by myths, legends, symbols and also by children's drawings.

Characteristics of Alechinsky's work are: - no straight lines - simple childlike images - many borders and frames, often deliberately drawn in a ‘shaky’ way and decorated with "broom-like fringes" . He liked to work with frames within frames so one  drawing may seem to consist of lot of a lot of smaller parts tinkered together.

Probeer eens om met een niet-watervaste fijnschrijver of met zwarte Ecoline en een pennetje of een sateprikker een paar dingen ´in zijn stijl´ te maken. Bekijk eerst wat voorbeelden van Alechinsky’s werk.  Teken ze gerust (deels) na, het wordt toch van jou! Laat je inspireren en doe dan lekker je eigen ding, waarbij afkijken altijd is toegestaan! (Kijk maar naar mijn “Jennichinsky” hiernaast.)

Teken met je fineliner en ga daarna met een nat penseeltje langs je lijnen om een aquareleffect te krijgen. (mijn Hema fineliner geeft een mooi paarsig uitvloei-effect en heb je Ecoline gebruikt dan zal dat grijs uitvloeien als je je lijn vochtig maakt. ). Laat ook hier het toeval weer uitmaken hoe het gaat worden.

Je kunt je tekening zo groot of klein maken als je wilt. Maak er een paar; je merkt dan dat je steeds ‘wilder’ durft te gaan werken, meer eigen vormen gaat bedenken en een zekere handigheid en losheid van tekenen krijgt!  En zoals bij alles:  hoe meer je het doet, hoe beter het gaat.

Try making some pages in the Alechinsky-style. First look closely at some examples of his work that appeal to you. Then copy one in your own way, adding, omitting or changing things as you go along. The trick is to be inspired by the original and then do your own thing with it.

When making your own Alechinsky-like drawing try using a non-waterproof sharpie or draw with black Ecoline or other ink that can be ‘washed out’ later. You may even consider drawing with a toothpick dipped in ink.

When the drawing is finished,  take a wet brush and gently go along some of your lines for a watercolor effect. (my  fineliner turned out to be purple when I did this. Black ink will give a soft gray feathering effect when you moisten your lines.). Let chance decide how it will turn out.

Copy a few of Alechinsky’s drawings in this way and try to really loosen up and go wild, working your own ideas into the copied parts. That’s the real joy of inspiration.

The more you copy the better and more original your results.

Oh yes,  feel free to sign it as your own but never forget to give credit to the inspirator.  

Tea-bag fun

Don’t throw away any wet teabags! Lay them out on a piece of drawing paper or watercolor paper. Or be really heroic and put them straight on a virginal journal page…  gently pushing them a bit flat and leaving them overnight. Carefully take them away the next morning and see what interesting marks they left behind! What do you see? What will you make of it? What or who’s hiding in your tea stains?

Gooi je gebruikte natte theezakjes niet weg maar leg ze eens op een stuk papier (goed teken- of aquarelpapier). Rechtstreeks op een pagina in je journaal kan natuurlijk ook. Ze laten interessante afdrukken achter.  Druk ze een beetje aan, laat een nachtje liggen en haal de zakjes de andere dag voorzichtig weg. Kijk wat een mooie afdruk je hebt!

Hier heb ik mijn fantasie laten werken om de te kijken wat er in de vlekken verborgen zat... 
Verschillende soorten thee geven vlekken in verschillende kleuren en vormen, afhankelijk van de zakjesvorm.
